I know nothing about Autocross racing. But I'm all over Barrel racing. It's kind of the same thing, but on horseback.
I designed a Barrel racing timer using a modulated infrared light beam, and a moified digital stopwatch.
I've been selling quite a few to folks in small autocross racing clubs who can't afford the more expensive timers.

So to jump right to the point...
For 175.00 dollars (plus shipping) you get....

1 infrared emitter
1 infrared detector
A modified digital stopwatch with 1/100 sec accuracy.
A computer program and special cable in case you want to use a laptop computer instead of the Stopwatch
2 tripods.

The whole thing is Battery operated, and completely portable.
Limitations of our curent system are...
This will only track one car on a single lap.
your start and finish line would have to be the same line (unless you buy two sets)
