Full Version: What class for an 88 Rx-7

Well this is my first post on here so I thought I should introduce first. I drive an 88 RX-7 Turbo II(dream car since I was 16). I have been autocrossing it for 2 years and fell in love with the sport.

Anyways on to the topic. Recently my car was hit in the front by another careless driver. It only took out the fender so I am alright. But when I got the check for the damage a local guy was selling his car. It is basicly a really good drivetrain attached to a car kind of deal, but long story short I bought it. Now what I am wanting to do is turn my first car into a monster mod car. I am going to swap the drivetrain in from the other car. But I am not sure what class I would be put in and what I need to do to be competitive on a national level. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the forum Gimpie!!!

Tell us a little more about the car you purchased, year, make, model, differences between it and your 88 RX-7. You might not have to go to a Mod class depending on some of that info. That is , unless you plan on making other radical changes in the process.

No I do want to move onto mod class. Just the thought of a stripped out monster making 380 hp going around a tight course gets my hair standing. What I plan on doing is pulling the drivetrain out of the newly purchased car and putting it in the first RX-7. Kind of a sentimental thing for me. I just need to know what class I will be in, rules for it and what the top dogs in the class have for their cars. I understand that this is going to be a very labor intesive project and that I am looking at 1000 hours worth of work easy. I just need a guiding light. Ohh yeah. The engine going in is a turbocharged street ported engine with full standalone computer.

Come on I know some one on this forum knows the answer. I just need a little help.

Digging through the rules is a laborous project in itself. The reason Todd asked for more info is because it is needed to determine the answer. I don't think you realize what a complex question you have posed and how hard it is to give an accurate answer.

As a general rule, if you swap drivetrains from a different car, you will be in SM (assuming we are talking SCCA).

Of course if you gut the interior and do all sorts of lightweight mods (lexan, etc) you will quickly jump to a Prepared class.
